The Next Big Thing: Daniel Rene |
daniel rene |
Daniel is the next Ricky Martin... he may not see any similarities between them, but we do! Other than the obvious (they're both Latin & gorgeous!), Daniel and Ricky are amazing performers who both put out hot, dance albums. Read on for our exclusive with the Latin heartthrob.
Lindzi.com: What are you up to right
now?
Daniel Rene: As we speak, I'm just relaxing with my family. I'm preparing for the single to come out.
Lindzi.com: Nice! Should we anticipate a true Latin album? How would you describe it?
Daniel Rene: {laughs} I've been debating! I don't know. I Take It Back, the first single, is very Latin, but also very R&B because of my vocal. When we started the album two and a half years ago it was me, Jon Secada, Emilio Estefan, and a lot of other producers and writers. Different songs ended up with different sounds. There are some beat ballads and pop ballads, which are very gushy and sappy. Obsession is the most hard core, R&B, hip hop song on the album. It's Latin, hip hop, pop. Different songs go different ways.
Lindzi.com: Why did you decide to put out an English album over a Spanish album?
Daniel Rene: Well, I'm Cuban-American. I was born in American... in the USA. My dreams have always been to perform in America and Latin America, but I've already done [Latin American].
Lindzi.com: That's right! What was it like touring with MDO, the group formerly known as Menudo?
Daniel Rene: A little crazy. {laughs} When I first got in it was a surprise to me and my family, but it was fun. I was in it for about a year and a half. It was great exposure. I learned a lot of things. It was a blast.
Lindzi.com: What did you learn from your experience with the group?
Daniel Rene: A lot about being on stage and stuff about the business. It was actually better to start off in a group that way we all went through it together. It was good for me because when I was in the group I was 14, which was young.
Lindzi.com: Ricky Martin was a member of Menudo, as well. Has he been an inspiration to you?
Daniel Rene: He's an inspiration for any Latin artist. I admire him very much. He's an unbelievable performer and he's been able to break that wall that only Gloria Estefan was able to do 10 or 20 years ago when she came out with Conga. I respect both Gloria and Ricky.
Lindzi.com: Have you actually met Ricky yet?
Daniel Rene: Oh yeah. One of the writers on my album is a dear friend of mine. She also has a song that's on Ricky's new album. The day that he was recording it, he invited her to go. He somehow found out that I was friends with her and asked me to come by, as well. We had a great time! We had lunch together and were laughing about the comparisons between the two of us. We aren't anything alike. The only thing we have in common is that we were in the same group. Not even that... he was in Menudo and I was in MDO.
Lindzi.com: What are the differences?
Daniel Rene: Our music. What it's all about! His music is very dance, big band Latin. My music is more R&B/Hip Hop/Pop/Latin. I'm an American who happens to be Latin!
Lindzi.com: Do you have a particular favorite track off the album?
Daniel Rene: Obsession is my favorite up-tempo and Lost Without You is my favorite ballad.
Lindzi.com: Who would you like to be with Just for Tonight?
Daniel Rene: {laughs} Somewhere between Britney and Mandy. One of those two. I'm very close to meeting Mandy since we have the same publicist. I'm not sure if I'll be able to speak!
Lindzi.com: In honor of Valentine's Day, what's the most romantic thing you've done for a girl?
Daniel Rene: From the front door of her house all the way to her bedroom, I put Hershey's Kisses on her floor. On top of her bed I left a note saying, "Now that I've kissed the ground you walk on, let me love you forever!" Of course this was when her parents weren't home. But that was years ago.
Lindzi.com: Awww, too sweet! Such a romantic! Totally different subject... what's weirdest thing a reporter has asked you?
Daniel Rene: I was on a radio station here in Miami called Y-100 and a fan called in and asked what I thought of, "Penal enlargements and breast implants." I said, {laughs} "Well, people do them. I don't necessarily agree with them, but people do them."
Lindzi.com: The fans can get kinda crazy, huh? What's the most insane thing a fan has done to meet you?
Daniel Rene: I was in Bolivia on tour with MDO. We each had our own suites in a condo. These five fans climbed up the walls of the condo at five 'o clock in the morning when I was sleeping in nothing but my underwear. They climbed in through the window and started clicking pictures. It boggles my mind because I don't know why people want pictures of me in my underwear.
Lindzi.com: The signature question... What drives you insane?
Daniel Rene: I hate when people are judgmental or not understanding of things. That happens often in this industry.
Lindzi.com: What do you do to escape the craziness?
Daniel Rene: Meditate... Pray... Relax... Draw... Drawing helps me to relax sometimes. Or, I'll just write music. I was born to entertain. It makes me happy and also puts a smile on other peoples' faces. I like doing things for other people.
Daniel is adorable!
