![]() Christina Milian is more than a pretty face. Already a seasoned actress, singer, and writer, the eighteen-year-old is best known for Between Me & You, her hit with Ja Rule. The girl behind rap's hottest hook, is now ready to go solo. With an album set for Spring, meet hip hop's latest starlet to hit the scene...
Lindzi.com: What was it like working with
Ja Rule?
Christina Milian: Working with Ja Rule was tons of fun.
When I first did the song, Ja wasn't in the studio and I hadn't even met
Ja. I had just signed to Def Jam and, about two months later, my A&R
guy called me. He was like, "Ja Rule's looking for somebody to sing this
song and they can't find any girl to sing it right. Can you come and meet
[his producer] tomorrow?" I thought it was a cool idea. The next day, I went
in. Ja had already rapped all over it. He just needed somebody to sing it.
After fifteen minutes, we had the song mapped out.
Lindzi.com: You're kidding? That's awesome. So, when
did you actually meet Ja Rule? What was it like making a video with
him?
Christina Milian: The next day, I got to meet Ja. He
was sweet. I came in with my mom and he was telling us how close he is with
his mom. Ja is so cool. When we did the video, that was fun. That was the
second or third time that we met each other. We vibed so quick. In the video,
what you see was all one take. We had such energy with each other.
Lindzi.com: Can we expect to hear from him on your
album?
Christina Milian: Possibly! I've already asked Ja if
he would do it and he said that he's down for it. I don't want to put him
on just any song. I want to make sure it's the right song for him. I did
this one song with Jermaine Dupri and it'll probably have a cameo by a rapper.
I don't know which one yet, but it'd be cool if I did it with Ja. The rest
of the album is all me! Maybe when we do remixes we'll have other
artists.
Lindzi.com: Oh, yeah? What other artists would you
like to work with?
Christina Milian: There's this guy Craig David. He's
from the UK and he's about to come out with an album here. I'd love to do
a song with him because he's really talented! I would also love to work with
another female artist. I have this song that I wrote called Cat Fight.
It's not on the album right now, but it's a dope song. It'd be cool to do
it with Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera or, even, Pink.
Lindzi.com: Ooh -- how about Mya? You're both very
similar. Are you compared to Mya often?
Christina Milian: {laughs} Just recently. Maybe two or
three people have said it? Maybe we have a similar, light tone in our voice?
I'd love to work with her. She's talented. Her and I are always in the studio
at the same time. I bump into her constantly. We've spoken to each other
for a minute before. She's from Maryland and I'm from Maryland. It turns
out we went to the same dance school and didn't even know it.
Lindzi.com: Tell me a little about your upcoming album.
Do you have a fave track?
Christina Milian: Gosh, I love all of them. {{giggles}}
That's a hard question. My first single coming out is AM to PM. It's
a fun, party/club song. I also love You Make Me Laugh. That was the
first song that I had written for my album. I got to do it with this producer
Bloodshy. I'd describe my sound as hip hop under-toned with nice, pop melodies.
We used a lot of live instruments too -- like violin.
Lindzi.com: What's your goal with all of
this?
Christina Milian: My ultimate goal is just to be happy.
I feel like I've been blessed with this career and the talent of singing,
writing, and acting. I just hope people recognize it and like it. Hopefully,
the album will be a huge success. I want it to sell a whole bunch. Eventually,
I'd like to open my own record company and help other artists.
Lindzi.com: I was looking at your web site... You
have the BEST style! Where do you shop?
Christina Milian: I like going shopping every where.
I like shopping on Melrose, but I also love getting vintage clothing. I make
a lot of my clothes. My mom and I tend to go to thrift stores. We'll get
tons of shirts and jeans. We'll cut it all up and dye pieces of the jeans.
Then we'll piece it all together to make dope jeans and skirts and stuff.
We also make these cool belts with rhinestones and feathers. I don't like
wearing the same thing everybody else wears.
Lindzi.com: What's something you've learned about
yourself in the past year?
Christina Milian: It's funny. I really learned that...
{laughs} Well, you know...it's been a year since I've been writing. I used
to think I couldn't write. I thought it was cheesy. My mom was like, "If
you can read. You can write." I've learned that I'm actually a good writer.
I wrote three or four songs completely on my own for the album and then I
co-wrote with a lot of the producers on the rest of the album. I've gotten
to write for other artists, as well. I've always been the type of person
who thought you can't say you can't do something until you've tried it. Whatever
you decide to do, if you put your mind to it, you can do it for sure.
Lindzi.com: You're kidding? Who have you written
for?
Christina Milian: I have a song out, called Play,
on Jennifer Lopez's new album. I have a song coming out soon on Jessica
Simpson's. There's a girl group called PYT. I wrote their first single, Same
'Ole Same 'Ole. Now a lot of people are calling and asking me to write
for their projects, which is flattering. I'm like, "Thank you!"
Lindzi.com: What's a life lesson you've
learned?
Christina Milian: I think everything takes a lot of work.
If you want to reach your goal, you have to stay positive. Life is wonderful.
If something bad happens, it happens for a reason. It's always a good learning
experience.
Lindzi.com: What do you like most about yourself?
Least?
Christina Milian: I loooove my personality. I like to
have fun, smile, and be happy. People have told me the same thing. I don't
have a least favorite characteristic. That sounds funny, but I think everybody
should love everything about themselves.
Lindzi.com: Now, this is for the prom issue. In honor
of which, what was your prom like?
Christina Milian: I didn't go to prom! I was in home
studies. I didn't get to go to any dances. Nothing. I would've loved to go.
Nobody's ever asked me to their prom, either. I guess it was because I was
busy. That would've been fun, though.
Lindzi.com: No dances? Nothing?! You'll have to work
something out.
Christina Milian: Actually... well, I go on the web all
the time. I send out a letter every two weeks on my web site to inform everybody
what's going on. I had told all the fans that I'm going to Florida for three
weeks to work on my show because I'm going on tour with 'N Sync. It's cute
because this guy had written on my Yahoo Club, "I heard you're going to be
out here in Florida and my dream for my entire life would be for you to go
with me to the prom. Will you be my prom date?" It was sooo sweet. I just
read this last night and was like, "Awww, I'd love to!" Maybe I'll try and
figure out a way to meet him while I'm in Florida.
Lindzi.com: That's crazy!! Speaking of which, what's
the craziest thing you've done with your friends?
Christina Milian: I don't do too many crazy things, but
we'd have sleepovers. When somebody was sleeping, we'd take their bra, wet
it, and put it in the freezer. When they would wake up in their morning they'd
put on this freezing cold bra. Or we'd put Tabasco on somebody's lips while
they were sleeping. {laughs}
Lindzi.com: What's the dating situation like for
you?
Christina Milian: I don't have a boyfriend. It's hard
because I love my music and I'm so focused on it. I'm cool with just having
male friends and girl friends. I usually like going out with my friends and
bowling and stuff. I don't want to get all serious with the whole dating
thing. I have so much time ahead of me and I'm young now. Guys get jealous
sometimes and I don't feel like dealing with that. No boys now. Later on,
I'm sure.
Lindzi.com: What drives you insane?
Christina Milian: Like good insane or bad insane? Good
insane would be hot guys who have great personalities and can play an instrument
or something. Guys who have goals are really cute. I don't really have something
that drives me bad insane. Maybe a dirty house? My sister's are such pigs!
And I'm a total neat freak. They've been messy like that since they were
little. I go crazy every time I see the house.
Lindzi.com: What's something you've never been asked
that you'd like to answer?
